Privacy Policy
Last updated: 3 November 2026
better-scale (“the app”) is a personal project built and operated by one individual for their own use (“the owner”). This policy explains what data the app handles, why, where it is stored, and how it can be removed.
What data the app handles
- Smart-scale readings: body weight and a body-impedance value sent by the owner’s own Bluetooth smart scale, plus body-composition figures calculated from them (for example body-fat percentage, BMI and water percentage). To calculate these figures the app also uses the owner’s own height, sex, date of birth and an athlete flag.
- Google Health data: when the owner authorises it, the app uses the Google Health API to add weight and body-fat measurements to the owner’s Google Health account. During setup it may read back only the entries it wrote, to confirm they were saved.
- Authorisation tokens: the OAuth tokens Google issues so the app can act on the owner’s account until access is revoked.
The app does not collect data from visitors to this website, does not use cookies or analytics on this website, and does not use advertising identifiers.
Why it handles that data
Only to record the owner’s own weigh-ins: to keep a history in a Google Sheet, to email the owner a confirmation, and to place the measurements in the owner’s Google Health account. It is not used for any other purpose.
Where data is stored and who processes it
- The owner’s Google account (Google Health and Google Sheets).
- A private web service hosted on Cloudflare, which keeps a log of readings and the status of each delivery so that failed deliveries can be retried.
- An email delivery provider, used only to send the owner a confirmation message.
These providers act as processors for the owner and are subject to their own terms and privacy policies. No data is sold, rented, or shared with any third party for their own purposes.
Google API Services User Data Policy
The app’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data obtained from Google Health is used only to provide the user-facing function described above. It is not transferred to others except as needed to provide that function, is not used for advertising, is not sold, and is not read by humans except with the owner’s consent, for security purposes, or to comply with law.
Retention and deletion
Readings are kept for as long as the owner wants a history. The owner can delete rows from the Google Sheet, delete entries in Google Health, delete the service’s stored readings, and revoke the app’s access at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions. Revoking access stops the app from reading or writing Google Health data. To ask for deletion of anything held by the service, use the contact address below.
Security
Requests from the scale device are authenticated with a shared secret over HTTPS. Secrets and tokens are stored as encrypted secrets in the hosting provider, not in source code.
Children
The app is not directed to children and is not offered to the public.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date above will be updated.
